How I chose my subjects?
Honestly speaking, it was quite hard for me. I didn’t know where my future was heading, what I wanted to do, what subjects I wanted to pick. I had my problems choosing too. I had a little help from some of my friends from an older year. I know some of you might be scared to, and that is why I wrote this article - to hopefully help you guys choose your subjects.
I didn’t know my ambition, what I wanted to do in the future, so I broke it down to what type of person I was. Was I a science person? Or was I an arts kind of person? For me, I’m more of an arts person, so most of my subjects I took are on the arts stream. You only can take 9 subjects and if you’re Malaysian, 5 of them are already compulsory, English literature and language, Maths, Malay and one science subject. This leaves you with being able to pick 4 subjects on your own. So I picked Drama, Textiles, History and PE. The only science subject I picked was chemistry.
If you are someone under arts, you can study things like theatre, performing arts, lawyer, music, psychology, interior design, fashion design, textile design and many more later on. If you are someone under science, you can study things like astronomy, agriculture, food technology, electronics, biochemistry, plant pathology and many more later on. For me, I have confirmed going for further studies on Arts, mainly performing arts.
I took chemistry and PE because I also had to be mindful of my ‘Plan B’ on the arts side - this really depends on whether you’re chosen or not, whether you’re lucky or not. So what if my ‘Plan A’ doesn’t work? Since I take PE, I can study further on to becoming a sports doctor. However, if you really want to take a subject of your choice and those subjects slots are full, you can take the subject through private candidate but it’s usually not suggested because it adds on more to your stress level. So choose your subjects wisely!
